We filmed this video prior to changing our name from Morton Capital to Morton Wealth. Our goal is to give our community an opportunity to meet our leadership team and hear our story. We hope you enjoy this behind-the-scenes look into our company.
Interviewer: Ready, Jeff? Tell me why you're passionate about this business?
Jeff Sarti: The responsibility we have to not only protect our clients saving their nest egg, but also to help our clients achieve their dreams. That responsibility, it's really very humbling and it gets me excited to jump out of bed every morning and come to work.
Meghan Pinchuk: This is a business where there will pretty much always be something new to learn. Luckily being open-minded and not accepting the status quo is part of our DNA.
Stacey McKinnon: Our company “why” is to help our clients get the most life out of their wealth and I love that goal because it's truly a sacred Duty. I actually imagine a world where if more people got more life out of their wealth. They might enjoy their lives more. They might go home happier and the trickle down effect could make a really positive societal impact.
Interviewer: How did Morton wealth begin?
Jeff Sarti: Lon Morton founded Morton Capital in the early 1980s and he was really a Trailblazer in the industry because at the time the standard way that advisors were compensated was really through commissions. In essence advisors were paid to sell a product and he just hated that model.
Meghan Pinchuk: Lon was selling insurance and investment products back then, and he would always tell the story of his “aha moment.”
Stacey McKinnon: He would go door to door selling insurance and he ran across this one gentleman, pitched his insurance product and then the gentleman stopped them and said, let me show you the brochure from the guy that just was here. Lon, kind of baffled, read through the brochure of the salesman that was there before Lon and he turned back to the gentleman, handed him the brochure back and said go with that guy's deal.
Meghan Pinchuk: And Lon thought wouldn't it be great if I could get paid for my objective advice, instead of selling a product.
Jeff Sarti: So what Lon did…he went off on his own to form Morton Capital and he became one of the first in our industry to provide truly objective conflict-free advice.
Interviewer: You're known for your alternative investment approach. Why do you believe in investing this way?
Jeff Sarti: We truly believe that incorporating alternatives into a portfolio is in many ways the only way to invest. Most investors, they stick with the artificial boundaries of only investing in stocks and bonds because that's what's familiar and comfortable to them. But limiting one's portfolio in this way, we think it's detrimental to successful long-term investing.
Meghan Pinchuk: Many investors think of alternatives as being riskier than other Investments. However, we primarily use alternative investments to control and manage risk. When you can find alternative investments that will truly behave differently than traditional ones, you can meaningfully lower volatility.
Stacey McKinnon: My favorite part about investing in alternative investments is it feels like our clients actually tend to sleep better at night. I think this is because alternative investments tend to be things you can touch and feel like student housing for colleges or universities, or maybe rents for boat marinas.
Jeff Sarti: That's our expertise - designing portfolios that are more stable and really within our control as opposed to simply being at the mercy of the market.
Interviewer: Your mission is to empower better investors. How do you go about doing that?
Stacey McKinnon: You know, investing is hard.I often talk to my friends or family members about the job I have today and how grateful I am that I entered Financial Services. Otherwise, I wouldn't know the things that I know now. Whether that's in how to set goals, know who to trust, how to invest, or just how to gauge risk versus return.
Jeff Sarti: Since investing can be intimidating, many want to hand over the reins of their financial decisions to their advisor and we just think that's a wrong approach.
Meghan Pinchuk: You can't skip the part where you identify what money really means to you and what elements make up a wealthy life for you. Those are very personal emotions and decisions that no one can identify, but you. Once clients have that purpose or North Star. We found that their chances of long-term success go up tremendously.
Stacey McKinnon: This is why our mission is to empower better investors. We don't want anyone to have anxiety around money or finances. We want people to be empowered with education and knowledge.
Meghan Pinchuk: From there, our job is to guide them in gaining a level of knowledge and learning that gives them confidence in their decisions. This confidence is what allows them to stay the course during the inevitable ups and downs that are unavoidable when you invest over the long term.
Stacey McKinnon: You know, we have a saying at Morton Capital that investing starts with investing in yourself, and if our clients can truly understand the emotions that they have around wealth and the plan to get them to where they want to go, and then be dedicated as lifelong learners to get there, I think that they'll truly be successful.
Interviewer: Tell me what sets you apart as a company.
Meghan Pinchuk: I like to think that we're consistent, and that we really practice what we preach. Unlike many companies that are focused on quarterly or yearly earnings, we take a very long-term approach to growing our company. We're also growing less for the sake of growth or just money, but because we feel passionately that if we grow as a firm over time, we can help more and more people.
Jeff Sarti: So much of what defines what we do comes down to our core values. There are five “E's:” Excellence, Empowerment, Empathy, Ethical, and Enjoyment. They drive all of our decisions from the teammates we hire, to the clients and families we enjoy working with, to the value that we want to bring to our client's lives.
Meghan Pinchuk: That includes helping our team members have fulfilling careers where they can grow, and reaching more families in our community who need
guidance.
Stacey McKinnon: We really want our clients to feel like they're a part of the Morton Capital family, and we work hard on behalf of our client families. They actually turn around and tell us stories about how they feel more confident in their financial future because of the work we do together.
Jeff Sarti: The hope is that our clients, that they look forward to meeting with their Morton Capital advisory team, with the knowledge that they'll be engaging with true partners that help them feel more secure and confident in their financial future. But also who they just simply enjoy working with.
Stacey McKinnon: We'll tell our clients anything we're honest, we're unbiased, we're not trying to sell anything and our clients knowing that we'll approach them with that unbiased hat, I think allows them to take our advice in and then act upon it more regularly, knowing that we're truly acting in their best interests.
Interviewer: What's the vision of the future for Morton Wealth?
Stacey McKinnon: I really just want to help more people, whether they’re our clients or not. I hope that Morton Capital can be a vessel of Education. Not just in things like what's a stock or what's a bond, but in how to goal set and truly make decisions that align with your values.
Jeff Sarti: We understand that many families may not be able to afford our services but that doesn't mean we have to limit our efforts just to our clients. Our team is really passionate about helping others, so we're looking to become more involved in the local community to help educate others around their financial decisions.
Meghan Pinchuk: It’s mind boggling to me that some form of basic financial education isn’t taught in our schools. Financial decisions are incredibly impactful in all of our lives, yet no one ever sits us down and teaches us what we need to know to make good decisions.
Jeff Sarti: We can help with this and give people tools and resources so they can make more informed decisions, and ideally walk away more confident in their financial future.
Stacey McKinnon: One of the things I've learned in my last few years at this company is that people generally make decisions for two reasons: for love, or for money. And if we can be a vessel of education, so people can make better financial decisions. I think they'll actually make decisions based on the things they love too.
